In July 2019, Prof. Corinne Hoesli was among several expert biochemical engineers who met in a panel at the Biochemical and Molecular Engineering XXI conference held in Mont Tremblant, Quebec to discuss the grand challenges in the field. The panelists identified 5 key thematic areas in biochemical engineering:
Novel products and non-traditional organisms
Pushing past the limits of biochemical synthesis
Bioprocess development for individualized medicine
Forward engineering for cellular and biomolecular control
Engineering to understand & exploit new biology
A perspective piece summarizing the conference discussions was recently accepted for publication in Biotechnology and Bioengineering, titled "The Importance and Future of Biochemical Engineering".
